Resolution.......WHAT?!
"I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus" (Philippians3:14) Adjusting our resolutions as time passes because we are unable to keep them seems a bit strange to me now, but it seemed to be somewhat essential to make this pact to ourselves, just for comfort sake. The great thing is, we don't need a New Year's resolution. We need a spiritual solution, and it is found in the pages of Scripture. In Philippians 3, the apostle Paul helps us understand what our priorities should be. On more than one occasion, he used athletic metaphors to describe the Christian life. In this passage, he compares it to running a race. But we need to understand that it is not the famous "50-yard dash". It's more of a long-distance type run. That's why we must pace ourselves. It really doesn't matter if you've held first place in a race for nine out of ten laps. What matters is the tenth, final lap. Whoever crosses the finish line first is the winner. (Stay with me people, not much more ;) The problem is that a lot of people have some kind of "yo-yo" relationship with God.....up and down for those who didn't catch the metaphor :) Either they are experiencing the ultimate spiritual high or they are down in the dumps. It's not easy to tell yourself these things when you are feeling bad. I have been there before and will go back plenty I am sure. It always helps to reprimand yourself though. We need spiritual consistency people! And we need God's help to stay with it. If we want to win in the "race of life", then we need to learn to pace ourselves. It's not too hard to do when you've got God in your corner ;)
