Seeing people who are pretty sick throughout my day is hard. Trying to smile and act like you don't know what they are going through is harder. There's something about these people. More than what you would think if you just saw them pass you in a mall or on the road.
The funny old guy that makes the corny random joke. You laugh, but have no clue why you are laughing, but the fact that he made you laugh helps him get through to the next chemo therapy session or the next round of shots.
The wise woman who has been there, done that and ain't afraid to tell us young-ins how to act. But, you get a smile out of her when you ask how her day went.
Small kids who have such a long road ahead of them, but smile and play their video games because they don't want to hurt.
It's easy to get frustrated with a patient when they are aggitated on the phone or expect you to make time for them. It's hard for a patient to smile, when they are physically hurting so much, but they do.
Why is it so hard for us who are healthy to smile or laugh when we are down? Working in the medical field, I have asked myself this question a lot. I just didn't realize how much it effected me until now.
I was told once, that I had the "child-like" faith in God. I see the things God has done and the things God is doing and I am in jaw dropping awe.
I praised God with my brother Wayne this past week. This has been such an answer to prayer. I can't describe what it feels like. The whole "jaw dropping awe" .... yeah... I will just leave it at that.
It's been said that, kids smile about 500 times a day. Adults average out to about 15 smiles a day. If that is true, then I would like to be a kid please :)
I smile a lot. I laugh a lot too. What's not to smile about? We are children of God who have been given the greatest gift immaginable. Our Father has created us in His image and Christ has paved a way for us to be with him in heaven.
When I see a patient smile at me, I am reminded that what I am going through might be hard to me, but what the next person is going through could be a battle of which I know nothing about.
Have you smiled today? :)
