"Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart." ( Deuteronomy 6:4-6)
These words spoken by Moses to the people of Israel can easily be forgotten by us today because we never really look in Deuteronomy and when we think of a great verse we seldom go back to this book in the bible. Last night I was discussing the meaning of the word sovereign. Usually when someone asks what that means you have to think about it for a while. You don't want to steer someone in the wrong direction, but instead help them to know Christ more intimate so your words must be perfect and they have to be clear to the person you are explaining them to. "People actually go around saying our God is sovereign, but never really grasp what the word means." - hope I quoted that right ladies ;) So, I sat back and thought about it and asked bluntly...,"well, what is the true meaning of that word." After doing a little bit o' research I found the meaning in the good ol' word......Sovereign-One that exercises supreme, permanent authority. I sat back after reading this definition and I couldn't even read anymore...that little bit was enough. Though I had understood the meaning of the word, this definition doesn't even begin to explain our Father or any of the things He continues to do for us. Moses knew what that word meant and he knew that there was something bigger than he could ever begin to fathom when concerning God. He put the Lord before everything he did and made it his whole life. When I opened my bible and flipped through the pages I just stopped for some reason and read that verse and man.....a lot of things went clanking around in my head and I just started to cry. This verse dictates our responsibility as children of God. I can remember when things weren't so clear....let's see things are usually not clear for me at least 2 days out of the week.....so it's good that I don't have to think too far back ;) I just think it's so awesome that God knows what we need right when we need it and He will prepare us for the tasks He has planned for us when the time comes. He is more than sovereign.....there are actually no words that describe Him, but next time people say that God is sovereign.....I won't just think of the definition of sovereign. I will remember our responsibility and cherish the fact that I am loved so much.
